I found this interesting article from The Pagan Way

....She said,
" Of course it may be easier to go out & buy your own oils, but making your own oils with your 2 hands is... Well... Magickal!!! Anytime you make your own Spiritual tools & items they're that much more powerful, because not only are you putting all of your energy into those tools & items, but you're adding all of your intent as well & what's more Magickal than that?!?! You're tools & items are being made from your heart, your soul, that very same place where your Magick resides within yourself!!! You can do a lot with this craft... You can customize your oils to fit your needs... Whether you want to wear them or use them Magickally (or both) you can manifest these oils for whatever you may need them for..."

TO MAKE YOUR OWN OILS, YOU'LL NEED:

•HERBS: That smell good or have desired Magickal properties (more on this later...)

•A CARRIER OIL: Such as jojoba or almond. (I prefer jojoba, because even though it’s more expensive, it doesn’t have its own scent. Almond oil will add a sort of nutty, food-like smell to your mixture, which you might like.) I don't recommend Olive Oil, because it unfortunately spoils very quickly... Jojoba & almond oils are really the best options & Jojoba is the cleanest in terms of scent...

•GLASS JARS: One for each herb you want to make an oil with... The half-pint ball jars for canning work well (Mason Jars.) I find that the Smaller jars work better... You can reuse smaller perfume bottles if you want, but be warned that your oil will more than likely take on some of that old scent... DO NOT use anything that contained pickles!!! Trust me... It's BAD!!!

•ONE LARGE POT: To boil your herbs & oil in...

•TONGS: To remove your jars from the boiling water...

•EYEDROPPERS: You may want to grab a pack of them, just in case you need them... You're going to use these to mix your oils together...

•PERFUME BOTTLES: You can use the Roller ball perfume bottles (which I love for travel!) Or you can use the perfume bottles with daubers (Pictures Below...) Or any bottle you prefer really...

•LABELS/STICKERS: I use the Sticker labels myself. I buy them at my local dollar store (I distress them to make them look Antique/old & I use them on my herb bottles. You could do this with your finished herbal oils as well) Or just use them as is...

•CRYSTALS, STONES OR GEMS: Or chips of crystals, stones or gems... These are optional... They will add more energies & Magickal properties to your oils...

•CHEESECLOTH: This is optional, but definitely comes in handy... You can use the cheesecloth to strain your herbs from your oils...

NOW YOU CAN GO AHEAD &:

1.) Pick out your herbs or other ingredients... If you are going the basic route, hit up a grocery store with a nice herb/spice section... Cloves, vanilla beans, cinnamon sticks, lavender & orange peel are relatively easy to find, & they all smell amazing!!! Clove, cinnamon, & orange can be combined to create a perfect fall scent... Vanilla is great on its own, or combined with just about anything & lavender is very relaxing... I wear it by itself when I’m feeling stressed...

***If you are interested in making oils that smell good, are Magickal & have properties like protection, luck, & romantic attraction, you will want to check out a book like Scott Cunningham’s: Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs, or do a lot of Googling & cross-checking on Pagan websites to make sure you have a general consensus of what a particular plant or herb represents... If at all possible, you will want to smell things in person though... A great find was angelica root, an herb for protection, which has a gorgeous floral-vanilla scent to it & mixes really well with just about everything!!! Even if you aren’t looking to make oils that are Magickal & with specialized properties, it can be good to check out a shop with a large herb/plant selection, because that’s where you’ll be able to find things like jasmine & patchouli, which are both classic fragrances (Patchouli is my fav! I wear it every day!) I find that when your searching for the more exotic & hard to find herbs, If you're not purchasing them online, Normally Ethnic stores & Ethnic grocery stores carry herbs & spices that are more exotic & hard to find... Stores like 'World Market.' When I was in Florida I bought Lavender, Juniper berries, saffron, Whole nutmeg, & Star anise from there & I fell in love with that store... If you don't have a World Market in your hometown (The World Market in my hometown is far away, so I rarely go there.) Here's the link to the online store: http://www.worldmarket.com/mobile.do...

2.) In a large pot, bring a lot of water to a boil—enough to submerge your jars... Immerse your glass jars and their lids in the boiling water for about five minutes to sanitize them. Than Use the tongs to get the jars & lids in & out of the water safely... CAUTION: They'll be very hot! Don't burn yourself!!!

3.) Remove jars & let them cool down... Boil the pot of water again. While it’s boiling, wash your hands thoroughly, so nothing on your fingers contaminates your jars or your oil...

4.) Once the jars are cool enough to safely touch, put your herbs in. I recommend doing one herb per jar, so you have a pure sense of each fragrance...

5.) Now cover the herb with the carrier oil. You’ll want to submerge the herbs completely, so the exact amount will vary... More-absorbent herbs might need a bit more oil. Be sure to label the jar’s lid so you won’t forget what’s in there...

6.) Now With the lids closed, place the jars back in boiling water for 10 minutes... Let them sit in the pan until the water cools...

7.) You can now remove your jars from the water, & put them in a sunny space for 3 days... If you're doing this in the summer season, you can take your jars outside & place them somewhere safe in the sun... but during the colder seasons, use the window that gets the most sun for the longest period of time...

8.) After the 3 days in the sun, you can now store the jars somewhere cool & dark for 2 to 3 weeks... The more patient you are, the stronger the scents will be...

9.) After 2-3 weeks (Or however long you store your jars for) You can now bust open those jars & start sniffing the herby-goodness! This is the fun part & where you get to be a mad scientist & decide what herb scent goes good with what... Than Using your eyedropper, extract the oils and combine them in your perfume bottle... Like that clove smell the most? Use twice as much of it as your cinnamon... You can combine as many herbal oils as you like in a bottle! It’s totally up to you, because you are designing your own signature scent. You’ll want to use the dropper to stir up the oils once combined—I recommend using multiple eyedroppers (possibly one for each herbal oil/bottle) but if you have only one, make sure to rinse thoroughly between extractions...

NOW... If you are super picky about not having herbal bits in your fragrance oils, you can use a cheesecloth to strain out the herbs (Put the cheesecloth over the mouth of the jar and pour the oil into another jar.)

***If you decide that you don't mind herb bits in your oils, & you don't use all the herbal oil in your oil fragrances, you can save the leftover herbs/oil & keep them in your basement or wherever you store them to steep them longer & than the herbal oils will become stronger smelling as time goes on... I suppose you could strain the herbs in the cheesecloth, set the cheesecloth aside somewhere sanitary while making your fragrances & than place the herbs back in the oil to steep longer when you're done making your fragrances... But if you do this make sure to be as sanitary as possible...

You can also add crystals & Gemstones for Magickal properties, or just to pretty up your bottle... Unless you are using larger bottles, you’ll have to find gemstone chips, which may be available at your local New Age store... You can purchase them online at online websites like: ebay, etsy, Amazon or an online bead store... But don't forget that the herbs you use have Magickal properties of their own (Make sure to check that out...)

10.) Label your bottles. You can get creative & distress your labels to make them look old/antique or decorate the labels however you'd like... Also, You may want to take notes to remind you what each scent smells like. Feel free to give them unique names, too. Herbs like: myrrh, cardamom & cinnamon were herbs that the ancient Egyptians used in their musks, you can combine those & call the resulting fragrance something like Ancient Egypt, Bastet, Ubasti & Pasht (or Bast) something like that... You can get creative & unique with your names 😉

ALSO: You should know that your oils are not going to be as strong or long-lasting as a store-bought oil-perfume (but it can become rather strong the longer the herbs steep in the oil) Either way, remember, they're yours & yours alone, so wear them with pride!!!

***The instructions were mainly on how to make fragrance oils, but to make Herbal & ritual oils, the directions are the same... The only difference is once your herbal & ritual oils are done, you'd probably want to store your herbal/ritual oils in small glass jars instead of perfume bottles... If you make larger batches you could store them in Mason jars or whatever type of jars you'd like...
